I'm collecting stuff for a huge sound design project I'm working on. If it's actually emulated faithfully, then it won't be over-saturated, and it will respond similarly to the audio. I think this also illustrates how much better it would be to be able to layer real analog gear, or well emulated analog vst, so that you're not actually getting too much saturation (just pure unadulterated distortion?). Isn't there something about listening to a record as opposed to a CD for instance? I think there's something intangible about analog gear. Just measuring the harmonic distortion with an analyzer I think is a bit too reductive. You could reduce any instrument to a single sinewave and you couldn't tell what instrument it is. Isn't this like taking a picture in time though? I think there is a dynamic behavior of analog by nature that has to be kind of programmed into digital products. ![]() ![]() Thanks again everyone! Loving everything I'm reading so far So whatever tools can do this well, I guess I'm all ears! lolĪnd one the other side of the same coin, what about some cheap but good analog gear? So it's almost musical in itself, and can carry with it a whole lot of weight and change the nature of the instruments in an interesting, non-linear way. This goes into my own theories I guess, but I think what makes analog so appealing on an unconscious level, is that the various imperfections resemble in some ways a live instrument - in the way it behaves harmonically especially. For one, it's almost like a living a breathing thing that ages with time, and can change depending on certain conditions, like humidity, and levels of wear and tear, etc. Analog does have a certain quality, and perhaps some of it is intangible and almost impossible to recreate. I don't actually care about purported claims about how something was made. I think I'm getting a lot of info from everyone that is helping me narrow down my search. But in a way, there are so many that it would be difficult to test them all out.
